Since the Kindling, when the forge-guilds of the deep mountains and the astral academies of the high observatories learned to cut runes that steer aether, rune-hulled ships have carried their rival houses out across the Milky Way. Every star pours aether along ley lines that steep its worlds in Ley Iron, Rune Quartz and Silver Oil, and any house that binds elementals and golems to the work can turn a barren rock into a forge. Now the good stars along the charted ley lines are filling fast and runeless ships have begun to prowl beyond them, so every house that wants to grow will sooner or later take what another has built.
